Sending documents to print seems simple but can be a complex task at times. An issue many people have experienced is font errors. When you use custom or exotic fonts, they don’t always transfer between computers cleanly which can cause errors during the printing process (wrong fonts, distorted text, missing characters). Sometimes the more obscure fonts won’t load on certain operating systems either. The best way to overcome this issue is to convert your text to outlines (paths) before sending your files to the printer. converting text to outlines ensures that the text will appear exactly as you intended. As an added bonus, text converted to outlines can be expanded like a vector image (no loss of resolution as the size increases). Here is a tutorial that shows how to convert text to outlines in Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop:
1. Choose your Selection Tool.
2. Select the text box you wish to convert.
3. Go to the Type menu at the top and click “Create Outlines.”
You can also access this by pressing Shift+Control+”O” after selecting your intended text to convert.

2. Go to the Layer menu at the top.
3. Click Type > Convert to Shape.
You can also access this by right-clicking the intended layer icon and selecting “Convert to Shape.”
After converting the text to outlines, save the document as a PDF file. This allows your printer to open the file in a number of different programs in case any changes need to be made. One note of caution is that text converted to outlines cannot be edited as text anymore so make sure you’ve proofread your document before performing these tasks. It’s also a good idea to create a hidden backup of text layers for future editing purposes.

Preparing images to print can be a tedious task. Reducing image size won’t cause a problem because you’re only removing unnecessary pixels. Increasing image size can be a nightmare. To make an image larger, computer software has to create new pixels based on an analysis of the original image. Even with all the advances in modern imaging software, this process still creates artifacts (noticeable imperfections produced by a digital process). Higher end programs minimize this effect but it’s still not perfect. There are two options to overcome this issue:
1. Design your images as vectors. Vector graphics are images rendered through the use of mathematics. Instead of storing the actual image, a vector file stores a set of instructions on how to recreate the image. The benefit of this format is the ability to be enlarged without artifacts. Instead of creating new pixels, the calculations stored in the file simply adjust for the larger size. Other benefits include small file sizes and the ability to easily edit the image at any time.
2. Bitmap (raster) graphics are based on a grid of pixels which are square points on the screen that comprise the images we see on the screen. The bitmap file stores the information for each pixel within the image so the file sizes for larger images can take up a lot of space. The reason we rely so heavily on bitmaps is that they can actually display life-like images. Bitmaps do not rely on mathematical equations so they can replicate the intricate lines and colors that are too complex for vectors to calculate.
Despite the difficulty of enlarging bitmap graphics, they can accomplish details that vector graphics cannot. Bitmap files can store much more detailed information such as the vivid color patterns found in nature.
Vector graphics can’t replicate the complicated tones and arrangements that make images look “real-life”. Vectors graphics are best suited to less detailed designs, they work very well for logos and stylistic renderings.
Knowing the differences between the two formats will make it much easier to ensure that you get excellent prints.

Document folding is a great way to add visual appeal or separate important sections of a printed document. Another benefit of folding is decreasing document size which increases ease of handling and transport. Some folds may require scoring (perforating along an edge) to ensure that the fold is smooth. Here is a list of the most popular fold styles you can use on your next print project:
1. Half Fold
The Half Fold is the most commonly used fold style. It’s perfect for cards and simple brochures.
The Z-Fold separates your page into a streamlined 6-panel document. The result is clean and easy to read which makes it well-suited for informational brochures and pamphlets.
3. Accordion Fold
Similar to the Z-Fold, the According Fold adds more panels while maintaining a functional and neat appearance.
4. Letter Fold

5. Barrel Fold

6. Gate Fold
The Gate Fold allows you to have a neat 4 panel document that opens up to a larger 4 page spread. This could work well for larger graphics that won’t fit on one panel while still providing separate smaller sections for text.
7. Two Parallel Fold
This fold allows for larger documents to folded into a more manageable size. Legal sheets can be folded to fit standard mail sizes.
8. Half + Letter Fold
This fold is perfect for larger paper sizes like 11″x17″ pages. They fit neatly into standard envelopes and are comfortable to handle.
9. Half + Z-Fold
This fold allows larger pages to be folded and opened neatly while minimizing the overall document size. This style suits maps, newsletters, and brochures with large graphics.

When searching for a print company to help with your printing needs, you will most likely notice the terms “offset printer” and “digital printer” being used everywhere. What’s the difference and which one is the best for your jobs? Fortunately most print companies provide both services and can help you make that decision. To help you with your print buying process, we’ve compiled some important facts to help you along the way.
Offset printing is a process that uses a set of metal plates and rubber ink rollers to transfer an image to a medium passing through the machine. This method of printing results in the most crisp, precise, and clear images with stunning color reproduction. The metal plates and rubber rollers press the ink firmly into the surface you are printing on. This pressure firmly bonds the ink to the material creating clean lines.
If you have opted for spot color printing using PMS colors (Pantone Matching System), the color will be correctly reproduced by mixing your specific color blend before printing. The ink on each roller can be adjusted to correct any imbalance in color.
Due to the linear nature of offset presses, extra rollers can be added to create special printing effects that other printing methods cannot replicate. Offset printing generally handles finer details better than any other printing process.
The initial cost of offset printing is higher than digital printing because of the extra setup time and materials needed to create the printing plates, prepare the ink, and align the machine. Short run jobs and variable data projects are not cost effective because of this restraint. However, large volume printing jobs are much more cost effective on an offset process due to the high print speed once the setup is completed. Offset printing also requires more personnel to operate the complicated machinery (which also adds to the cost of using offset presses). Quick turn-around times are not usually available for offset printers due to the extra setup time and special attention needed during the printing process.
Digital printing is an entirely different animal. This process involves directly transferring a digital image to a medium via toner, ink jet, or laser activated ink. There is minimal setup needed and the machinery is less complicated to operate, making digital printing ideal for short print runs with fast turn-around requests. Though it may not rival offset presses for ultra-fine detail, digital printers are drastically improving every year in both quality and versatility. Due to the ease-of-use and quick setup, digital printers are also able to make concepts like variable data cost-effective. You can print the exact number of copies you need and target specific sections of a printed piece for each group of your clients.
Though incredible quality can now be achieved through digital printing, an offset press will still produce a superior level of quality. Color matching is also more challenging in a digital environment as color is strictly defined by a combination of cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK); pre-mixed Pantone inks are not used. And while digital printing is incredibly affordable for short and medium volume print runs, the per piece price is going to be higher than offset for very high volume print jobs.

This enormous success is unprecedented with independent music releases.
Macklemore and Lewis’ songs and videos often mention a great love for their native city, Seattle. The newest video for Can’t Hold Us features sprawling panoramic views of the Emerald City as well as a special feature atop the iconic Space Needle. Everyone at United Reprographics was ecstatic when we were asked to print a custom flag for the video. The flag displaying the artists’ album cover was flown at the top of the Space Needle for the video shoot.
J&D Foods are innovators in the seasoning market with their Bacon Salt products. Due the recent public fascination with bacon (and because it just tastes so good) business is booming. Founders Justin and Dave dream that one day, everything can taste like bacon.
As an April-Fools joke, the company made a spoof advertisement for “Baconlube” personal lubricant. They were quickly surprised by the amount of Bacon Salt fans requesting to purchase the Baconlube. J&D Foods stepped up to the challenge and turned Baconlube into a real product which is now for sale on their website.
Not to be outdone by their own creativity and audacity, they pushed the envelope even further by developing Bacon Condoms! These condoms are designed to look like bacon in addition to being coated in Baconlube before packaging. Clever slogans such as “Make your meat look like meat,” made the product even more amusing.
